LynLight Parent Literacy Nights

A Resource for Schools to Support Families

Invite LynLight to Your School

Schools and families share the same goal: helping every child become a confident reader.

LynLight Parent Literacy Nights are designed to support schools by providing families with clear, research-informed information about reading development and reading challenges.

These events help parents better understand how children learn to read, why some students experience difficulty, and how schools and families can work together to support reading growth.

Parent Literacy Nights are offered at no cost to schools as a resource to support family literacy understanding.

Informed by Reading Science

LynLight Literacy is informed by decades of research on how children learn to read.

This body of research, often referred to as the science of reading, highlights the importance of explicit instruction in foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, language comprehension, and reading fluency.

The LynLight framework helps organize these research-informed principles into a clear process that supports both educators and families in understanding reading challenges.

Parent Literacy Nights introduce families to these ideas in a way that is accessible and supportive of the literacy work already happening in schools.

Why Parent Literacy Nights Matter

Many schools are looking for ways to help families better understand reading development and the challenges some students experience as they learn to read.

Parents often notice when their child is struggling but may not fully understand:

  • how reading skills develop

  • why progress may sometimes be slow

  • how schools identify reading difficulties

  • what kinds of support help students improve

Parent Literacy Nights provide an opportunity to offer families clear, accessible information that helps them better understand the reading process.

When families understand how reading develops, they are better able to partner with educators in supporting their child’s learning.

What Families Learn

During a LynLight Parent Literacy Night, families are introduced to several key ideas about reading development and reading challenges.

Topics typically include:

  • how children learn to read

  • the different skills involved in reading

  • common reasons students struggle with reading

  • how instruction and intervention support developing readers

  • how families can encourage reading growth at home

The goal is to help parents gain a clearer understanding of reading development so they can support their child while working collaboratively with their school.

LynLight Insight

When families understand how reading develops and why difficulties occur, they become powerful partners in supporting student progress.

Supporting Collaboration Between Schools and Families

LynLight Parent Literacy Nights are designed to support the partnership between schools and families.

These events help families better understand the important work schools are doing to support reading development while giving parents additional context about how reading skills grow and why some students require different levels of support.

The goal is to strengthen communication and collaboration so that schools and families can work together to help students succeed.

Additional Resources for Parents

Parent Literacy Nights are designed to be educational and informative for families.

Parents are introduced to resources such as the Parent Guide and the LynLight 7-Step Literacy Roadmap, which provide additional information about reading development and reading challenges.

Some families may also choose to explore optional LynLight services such as consultation or guidance in navigating reading difficulties. Participation in these services is entirely optional, and the primary purpose of Parent Literacy Nights is to provide helpful information for families.

Hosting a Parent Literacy Night
